RE: New Resource for Fighting Food Stamp Budget Cuts

As the House and Senate return to Washington (12/5 and 12/12 respectively), it becomes more urgent to reiterate our continued opposition to the proposed cuts in the Food Stamp Program. The House and Senate have approved separate FY 2006 Budget Reconciliation Bills. Staff-level discussions already have begun to produce a conference version. Please urge members of Congress to adopt the Senate’s version of the FY 2006 Budget Reconciliation Bill with NO cuts to the Food Stamp Program.

 New Resource:

These Editorials, Columns, and Op-Ed Pieces in Opposition to Food Stamp Program Cuts are intended to assist you when contacting your member of Congress and local media sources. The document is a compilation of recent columns, editorials, and op-ed pieces opposing cuts to the Food Stamp Program. It is sorted by state for easier distribution of parts to members of Congress; however, the document can also be effective when used in its entirety, showing that the proposed cuts to the Food Stamp Program affect communities throughout the country and have drawn widespread opposition.

This resource will be updated regularly and posted on the FRAC website under the “Take Action” section.

Action Needed:

  • Urge your members of Congress to tell conferees that they oppose any food stamp cuts.

  • Urge your members of Congress to “VOTE NO” on any FY 2006 Budget Reconciliation Bill containing cuts to the Food Stamp Program.

  • Join the nationwide Call-in-Days to Save Vital Services the week of December 12th, 2005 – Contact your Member of Congress at 1-800-426-8073.

  • Contact your local media and let them know that the proposed cuts to the Food Stamp Program in the House FY 2006 Budget Reconciliation Bill will slash vital benefits to 255,000 low-income Americans.
