A New Resource for Feeding Children & Youth in Shelters Now shelters are eligible to use the federal entitlement program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program, to feed youth up to eighteen years of age in their facilities. This expansion of eligibility to a maximum age of eighteen years will help provide financial support for often strained shelter budgets. Shelters will be reimbursed for meals and snacks served to children age 18 and under residing in the shelter. Participating shelters can receive a reimbursement of $1.23 for breakfast, $2.24 for lunch or supper and 61 cents for a snack. For each child served, shelters can receive reimbursement for up to three meals or two meals and one snack each day. To apply for this program, contact your state Child and Adult Care Food Program agency. For more information on this important program or a list of state agency contacts, please visit the Food Research and Action Center's website at www.frac.org or call Geri Henchy at (202)986-2200, ext 3025.
