Still, too many students miss out on school breakfast and the positive outcomes that stem from participation. Just over half of low-income children who participate in school lunch also participate in school breakfast. School nurses can help increase student nutritional intake through school breakfast participation by encouraging their school(s) to implement a breakfast after the bell program and to offer nutritious breakfasts at no cost to all students, particularly in schools or school districts with high concentrations of students certified for free and reduced-price school meals.

Read the reportThe president’s fiscal year 2021 budget does not propose any direct changes to the federally funded Afterschool Meal and Snack Programs. These child nutrition programs, like the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, and the Summer Nutrition Programs, are federal entitlement programs and are not part of the president’s proposal for the discretionary budget. The proposed budget does, however, zero out funding for the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC), the largest federal funding source for operations of afterschool and summer programs.
